Our Windsor Café

You’ll see a variety of Cafés in Windsor, and nestled among them is Casa Nata’s Windsor location where we make our authentic Portuguese Custard Tarts.

The design intent behind our café in Windsor was similar to the Thornbury café – simple yet striking. However, we faced a challenge, and that was designing a functional space to bake our tarts and host our customers, all with a smaller space to work with.

As with our Thornbury location, we wanted the heart of the operation – making our Portuguese tarts – to be the focal point. We accomplished this by encasing the kitchen in glass and providing intimate seating directly in front of the kitchen, allowing customers to watch the whole process.

We didn’t inherit any heritage-listed elements in this space, which has allowed us to play with the space and add more contemporary components that suit the vibe of a café in Windsor.

Our marble workbench was chosen as it is the ideal material for handling pastry. This marble bench set the tone for the rest of the space, and we have complemented it with walnut and timber cladding, minimal furniture, and warm white, textured walls and ceilings.

Our serving window is a point of difference from other cafés in Windsor that allows you to order and collect your coffee and tart quickly and easily.

Opening a Café in Windsor, Victoria

The decision to open up the café in Windsor was largely due to the success of a pop-up store we did in Toorak. We also have loyal customers in the South of Melbourne who travel out to our Thornbury location, and we wanted to make our tarts more accessible to them.

Coincidentally, when we started thinking about opening an additional store, a gorgeous corner shop with floor to ceiling windows with plenty of natural light became available. Melbourne’s iconic Chapel Street location suited our title of ‘Melbourne’s home of the Portuguese tart’, and it just felt right.

So, of course, we jumped at the opportunity, and the café in Windsor was born.

The incredible energy behind the surrounding cafés in Windsor is why we chose Windsor as the location for our second café.
